Under current FIFA rules, teams in each group earn 3 points for a win, 1 point each for a draw, and zero for a loss. After three matches apiece, the two teams with the highest totals advance. That is the whole system. No adjustment for margin of victory, no weighting for when goals were scored, no acknowledgment that two identical scorelines can represent entirely different degrees of dominance. Three points for a win, one for a draw, zero for a loss — unchanged since 1994. However, this system is broken and, as it turns out, profoundly unfair.
The 2026 tournament arrives with the familiar arithmetic of nonsense: three points for a win, one for a draw. As if Gödel could not already prove that any formal system rich enough to encode elementary arithmetic contains unprovable statements, football expects us to believe this integer tripartition — 3 : 1 : 0 — captures anything resembling ordinal truth between national sides.
Let $\pi = 3.14159\dots$ be the first witness against this fraud. Consider a group of three teams scoring {7, 6, 3} over ninety minutes each of hexagonal play (three fixtures, yes, but let us push further). The sum $S_2 = \sum k_i^{\,2}$ yields 79 — not prime. We know from Bertrand’s Postulate that between any integer n>1 and 2n lives at least one prime; yet here our group total escapes even the comfort of primality. The system is broken.
Now define a score functional:

where g(t) is the cumulative goal function and φ = √2 (the silver ratio — appropriately underappreciated, just as the 17th-placed World Cup side is). The weight e(−φt/90) penalises late goals less than early ones. Under this transformation, two matches with identical scorelines produce different functional values if their temporal distributions differ. Which means: a 2–0 victory in the final minute is worth exactly √3 − 1 times what an early 2–0 drubbing earns. The current system says both are “two points”. This is not scoring; this is surrender to Fourier-space ignorance.
The proposed new system: abandon groups entirely. Every World Cup team plays every other — a complete graph Kn, where n = 32 (or 48 in the expanded format) yields C(32,2) = 496 fixtures, or C(48,2) = 1,128. The league table is then determined not by crude counting but by a continuous ranking functional:

where Gi is goals scored, Pi points earned, α = 1/(2π) and β = (√5 − 1)/2 (the golden ratio’s fractional part — appropriately elusive). Every fixture contributes to a universal integral; no two teams can be collapsed into an arbitrary integer equivalence class as the current system does.
Why Kn?
The set of match outcomes forms a complete graph on n vertices. Consider Euler’s formula: V − E + F = 2−4g. With E = C(n,2) edges already consumed by every-vs-every play, the genus g of a football tournament is at minimum zero (planar, spherical). Any group-stage partition forces edges into disconnected components; the Euler characteristic becomes Vk − Ek + Fk = 2−4g+k(k−1) for each sub-group k, violating planarity unless we admit that groups are topological lies.
The only honest structure is a single table — every side against every side — with standings governed by the integral above, where every fixture increments or decrements an irrational area under the ranking curve.
We do not propose this for its elegance — though it has some — but for what it reveals: that integer scoring is simply applied illiteracy disguised as tradition. The next World Cup’s mathematics must be written not by FIFA committees but by someone who can actually integrate a Bezier curve representing ninety minutes of possession probability.
Until then, we remain trapped in a finite state-space analysis: group totals escape even the comfort of Bertrand primes, generating exactly √729 different outcomes per hexagonal cluster. A beautiful number. Shame nothing about the current system respects that fact.
