This is the second instalment of The Journal’s World Cup Model. For those who missed the first edition, a rigorous — some would say disproportionately rigorous — recap of the methodology follows before we proceed to the updated projections. Japan, which the previous model co-crowned as a finalist, has meanwhile finished second in Group F with five points. The model registers this as a corrective oscillation and declines to comment further.
The Method — For New Readers
The model treats each nation k as a discrete time series indexed by match number n. Four steps convert raw scorelines into a championship probability score Sk.
Step 1 — Momentum Integral
The cumulative goal trajectory for team k through match n:
where Pk,i is the point haul in match i. This is the discrete integral of the team’s scoring process, sampled at each match index.
Step 2 — Successive Finite Differences
Three layers of finite differences capture velocity, acceleration, and jerk of tournament form:
Step 3 — Newton Forward-Difference Interpolation
Newton’s forward-difference interpolation constructs the unique polynomial of minimum degree passing through all observed data points. For a team with Gk(0) = 0, Gk(1), and Gk(2) known, the degree-2 interpolant is:
Evaluated at n = 21 — the World Cup Final by match-index convention — this gives each team’s projected cumulative score. To illustrate with Edition 1 data: Germany opened with 7 goals then scored 2 in match 2, encoding a sharp deceleration (Δ² = −5):
Mathematically, Germany will have scored negative goals by the Final. The model does not apologise. France and Japan, each scoring 3 goals per match in Edition 1 (second derivative zero, polynomial linear), project cleanly:
As the tournament advances, the polynomial gains higher-degree terms. A variance penalty (σ = 2.3, derived from the 2022 World Cup inter-group variance σ² = 5.29) is applied to teams whose inter-match performance variance exceeds this threshold.
Step 4 — Championship Probability Score
The extrapolated trajectory is collapsed into a single composite score:
Weights are calibrated on 2018 and 2022 World Cup group-stage data: w₁ = 0.50, w₂ = 0.30, w₃ = 0.20. GDmax is the highest goal differential recorded in the current group stage (8, held by France).

Model Update — Third Finite Difference Applied
With 48 group matches processed and all twelve standings finalised, the polynomial has been re-fitted to the complete dataset. The quintic spline’s variance gate (σ = 2.3) excludes six teams from the first-tier projection bracket, chiefly those whose points-per-match variance exceeded the 2022 baseline. The resulting eigen-value spectrum bifurcates cleanly into a dominant twin-peak — France and Argentina — a secondary cluster of seven, and a long tail of mathematical irrelevance.
Japan’s demotion from co-favourite to mid-table projection is noted without embarrassment. The model does not apologise. The model iterates.

France leads at Sk = 0.960, driven equally by its perfect points tally, the highest goal differential in the tournament, and a goals-against ratio of just 0.20. Argentina follows at 0.938 with a single goal conceded across three matches — a defensive discipline the model interprets as a structural rather than incidental feature. Mexico, with six goals scored and none conceded, reaches 0.925 and deserves more attention than the popular press is currently affording it.
Netherlands (0.734) registers as the high-variance outlier of the top cluster: ten goals scored offset by four conceded pulls its w₃ component down significantly. Brazil (0.785) and Spain (0.777) occupy a tighter defensive bracket. The remaining 38 qualified teams compute scores below 0.60 and are, for projection purposes, treated as stochastic noise.
In summary: the model declares France and Argentina as the two teams with a statistically defensible path to the final. Mexico is the dark horse the model quietly recommends you watch. Japan has been moved to footnote status, where it will be reviewed at the quarter-finals.
